What It Means to be a Feng Shui Master
Feng Shui has become well known in the United States over the past few decades. Hobbyists range from the person who buys a wind chime or crystal for fun to the person who is descended from generations of practitioners. What does it mean to be a Feng Shui master? How does a Feng Shui master differ from an interior decorator?
The Art of Feng Shui
The art of placement to achieve balance and harmony has developed over thousands of years in different countries of the East. It has only become a method of decorating a homes interior in the last few dozen years. Traditionally, Feng Shui dealt with the mysteries of earth and sky. There is an ancient form of Feng Shui called kan-yu, which deals with landform classification.
The Feng Shui master of this form would select auspicious places to build cities and villages and, more importantly, he would select the best burial sites for important families. It was believed that bad energy in an ancestors burial place would cause misfortune for the living family members. The founding of the Han dynasty more than 2,000 years ago was credited to the Feng Shui master Huang-shih Kungs ability to choose an auspicious burial site for the first Han emperors terminally ill parent.
This Feng Shui master also used his abilities as a rainmaker, shaman and diviner and was able to use magic to prevent an evil sorcerer from draining energy from the land around that auspicious burial place. Other ancient Feng Shui masters were called on to find water and were experts in geography, mythology, poetry, and astronomy. They not only studied the flow of energy through mountains and valleys, but calculated the effect on that energy from bodies of water, changing landscapes and the stars in the heavens. Using this knowledge, they then worked to diminish the effects of bad luck and increase the effects of good luck for individuals and groups of people.
Feng Shui Master Training
Many of the historic Feng Shui masters came from many generations of masters and most could trace their ancestry back through many dynasties. Studies frequently include several schools of Buddhism, I-Ching, Confucianism, Taoism, Yin-Yang philosophy, holistic healing, Theory of Chi (the energy force) and Easter history and folklore. While training meant, and still means, intense study of many hundreds of books, no student can complete his training without studying under at least one master of the art.
Mastery of the many arts involved in Feng Shui is only a small part of the picture. The application of the arts is very complicated and must be practiced for many years before a student can become a practitioner.
